Privacy Policy
Last updated July 18, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how Lesson Recorder handles information when you use the Lesson Recorder app and related service (“Service”). Questions or requests can be sent to privacy@lessonrecorder.app.
The short version
- Your audio recordings stay on your device; we do not upload them.
- Speech-to-text transcription runs on your device.
- AI highlights are optional. Lesson text leaves your device only after you separately agree to cloud processing and request or enable highlights.
- We do not require your name or email to use the app, sell personal information, or use the data for targeted advertising.
Recordings, transcripts, and AI highlights
Recordings and on-device transcripts are stored in the app on your device. Audio is not sent to our servers or to OpenAI. You control whether to back up, export, or share copies outside the app.
When you request AI highlights, or enable Auto-highlights after accepting its separate disclosure, the app sends the lesson transcript, its timestamps, lesson title, and any teacher name you entered to our backend. The backend sends the transcript and timestamps to OpenAI to create highlights. The lesson title and teacher name are not included in the OpenAI prompt. Do not include information in a lesson that you would not want processed for this purpose.
Our backend does not maintain a long-term transcript database. A completed highlights result is kept in a short-lived cache (currently up to 30 minutes) so a retry can return the same result without repeating work or charging another credit. OpenAI’s handling of information it receives is governed by its own terms and privacy commitments.
Information we process
- Anonymous app identifier and authentication data. The app creates a random identifier and credentials to connect your device to its credits and service state. These are stored in iCloud Keychain when available, so they may be available across devices signed in to the same Apple account.
- Service, usage, and security data. We process the anonymous identifier, credits, successful and failed highlight events, rate-limit data, and aggregate service metrics to operate, secure, and improve the Service.
- Purchase information. Apple processes payments. We receive and verify Apple-signed transaction information needed to grant and protect credits; we do not receive your payment-card number.
- Network and diagnostic information. Our hosting and security systems process IP address and request information to route requests, prevent abuse, diagnose failures, and apply rate limits.
Service providers
We use the following providers to operate the Service:
- OpenAI processes transcript text and timestamps to generate AI highlights.
- Apple provides in-app purchase processing and transaction verification services.
- Vercel hosts the backend that receives Service requests.
- Upstash stores service state such as authentication, credits, rate limits, and the short-lived highlights cache.
These providers may process information where they and their service providers operate. Their processing is also subject to their applicable terms and privacy notices.
Retention
Local recordings and transcripts remain on your device until you delete them. Files you export or back up are controlled by the destination you choose. Removing the app removes app-container data, but credentials stored in iCloud Keychain and files you exported or backed up may remain until you remove them through Apple or the relevant storage provider.
On our systems, short-lived rate-limit, usage, analytics, and highlights cache records expire on schedules appropriate to their function. We keep active authentication and credit records while they are needed to provide the Service. We may retain limited Apple transaction records after account deletion to prevent fraudulent or replayed purchase claims, and may retain information where law or a valid legal process requires it. Aggregated metrics that cannot identify your account may remain after deletion.
Your choices and deletion
You can decline cloud AI processing and continue using recording, importing, playback, and on-device transcription. You can turn Auto-highlights off in Settings. You can delete local lessons in the app and delete server-side account data from the in-app account-deletion control. You may also request access to or deletion of server-side data associated with your anonymous identifier by emailing privacy@lessonrecorder.app.
Children and recording others
Lesson Recorder is for adults and is not directed to children under 13. If you record another person, including a minor, you are responsible for obtaining any consent required by law and any parent or guardian permission that applies. If you believe that a child has provided information to our Service without appropriate authorization, contact privacy@lessonrecorder.app.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the Service changes. We will update the date above and, when required, provide additional notice before a material change takes effect.
